I am starting a PC Repair Business. I would like to offer data recovery for people who accidentally deleted files. I assume there is decent software out there for that. What is the best solution for this scenario?
Also, I would like to offer the same for people with dead, or dying, hard drives. This would require a more “physical” approach. What is the best solution for this scenario?
Please answer both questions. I am not sure how much money I want to sink into this… I guess it depends on the market for the service. For the first example, I would have no problem buying software (but freeware is nice too, if it works). For the second example, I will assume it is expensive, so just give me whatever you can.
Top answer will go to whoever give me the most useful info (answers both questions, gives more than one solution to each example, gives me something I can actually use and works). Thank you!

I use Runtime software’s GetDataBack.
in 6 years it’s never failed me.
and once you buy, all new update versions are free.
EDIT:their best package is $179.us thats getdataback for fat and getdataback for ntfs, both ntfs and fat disk explorer software, and raid reconstructor.
Not to be mean but sounds like the public maybe better off without your service if you’ve never done any data recovery before how good a tech can you be? Go get your A+ and some schooling or study& experiment a bit.. hone your skills and then get into the game. I do tech work on the side and hate it when poeple say “well the last guy did this….” and create more trouble than they fix (yeah GeekSquad too!) or flat out tell some ‘lie’ because they have no idea what they are talkin about.
But I am willing to help too…
Recovery software: Recuva (free)http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads38.ht…
Payware: Undelete, GetDataBack FAT & NTFS
Freeware: Free Undeletehttp://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system…
As for physical data recovery it on a case by case.. if the controller board is shot you may find the same model drive and flip them. If the drive is not reading data sometimes freezing it in an air tight ziplock and then plugging it back in will get it running long enough to copy the data off (ghost is good here)http://www.wikihow.com/Recover-a-Dead-Ha…
I am A+, N+ and have a degree in networking tech.. I know the A+, etc doesn’t cover what your asking but it is good for starting your business. I am almost the opposite of you I have worked and experimented with backups & data recovery and just got into a position where I have to do recovery for a company’s data & never really used any of the enterprise software, more a ghost or drive image users myself… there is a lot no ‘book’ can teach you… but trust me that freezing a hardrive works (google it) no one can say why, but it does. I use it as a last ditch effort. I met a guy that builds clean rooms once & if you’ve got that kinda money you don’t need to be fixin PCs on the side..lol. Weird thing is I think people have disassembled drives in not so clean environments and they still worked (for how long?) I remember seeing an article on modding the harddrive (see sources)… Have Fun!
Good Luck
