My mom’s computer is really screwed up, so We decided to do a re-installation of XP using a cd titled: “Toshiba Recovery and Applications/drivers.”
There is also a note on the label of the disk that reads: “The software included on this recovery disc was pre-installed on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your Toshiba Computer system.”
first off, is this the C.D we need to re-install XP?
When we do the actual re-installation, nothing from the previous installation will remain, right?
Finally, what are all the steps required to do the actual re-installation? Is it just pop the disk in and follow the on-screen directions?
Any help greatly apprecciated.

If your mom’s computer is the one that recovery disk came with, it should work.
Generally, nothing will remain. Early on in the “recovery” you may have the option to “recover” only the operating system, that is, retain your data files. There are two problems with this.
1. Although your applications will still be on the computer, they won’t be “installed” and so probably won’t run. You’ll have to reinstall them. Unfortunately, since the files are still there, the applications may not work after the reinstall and you may have to: reinstall, then UNinstall, then reinstall a second time. Fun, isn’t it?
2. Your files (data, videos, music, documents, …) will still be there, but they may not be accessible to your new user account (even if you give it the same name as the old one. It’s a Windows thing.) There’s a way to get them back, but it’s a nuisance to have to go through.
So it’s probably a good idea to back up any files you want to save to CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or an external drive even if you try for a non-destructive recovery.
Finally, yes, the CD should lead you through the reinstall.
Good luck.
To me, Toshiba is complicated. Right now I don’t think thats the XP disk. Try the disk, and the computer won’t log in, instead it will ask to boot from CD when you turn your computer on. If it doesn’t then it isn’t the disk. The Toshiba Drivers disk is probably for service packs or updates for windows.
