After my husband files the taxes online, the software is kept on our bookshelf and they are piling up! Would like to toss them if there is no reason to keep them. (My husband is a pack rat so I don’t want to ask him the question).

I keep all tax software as long as I keep any records relevant to the tax year that the returns applied to. It’s impossible to print out a copy of the tax return without the tax software. It’s also MUCH easier to prepare an amended return if you have the tax software and data that you originally used. For this reason alone I keep the software and backup copies of the data files for at least 10 years. I don’t keep the boxes, but do keep the CDs in protective sleeves and file them with copies of the tax returns. I also burn additional copies of the data files onto CD and keep them in safe storage. I have at least 2 full copies of everything stored at separate locations.
Buy them online. You can download them for 3 years. Toss that stuff. At best, you need the CD itself, one little wafer
No, but it would be nice if they would offer an upgrade for the next year or two.
