My suggestion is don’t buy any, download Personal Ancestral File 5.2 from the LDS website for free. It has all the bells and whistles of most of the commercial programs (in fact some of them are obvious rip-offs of PAF) and it’s completely free! Which makes sharing with your family easy.
It’s very widely used and the .paf file can be imported by most other good programs, should you want to change in the future, once you know what features you like and don’t like. In my opinion, it’s only slight weakness is in the presentation, on screen, and in print-outs. But there is a great little add-on program you can buy for $8 or so, which produces beautiful charts.
