How Do I Reformat A Dell Computer W/ Windows Xp And No Recovery Cd?

I have a Dell that is only a few months old, but it has been acting funny, so I wanted to start over from scratch. I may have caught a virus, but none of the software or online scanners are catching anything. In particular a tab keeps opening on the task bar and then closing, which I think is a virus/spyware. I am going to back everything up, but afterwards I need to figure out how to reformat the computer and reboot windows. Any help would be apprecaited. Thank You.

You don’t not without the installation disk; Have you tried using Ccleaner to clean your registry If not download it and clean it first. Also under system info check and see what programs and processes are loading. You only have to leave Explorer and the System tray running You need to write everything down that is running; Then go to sysinfo.org to see exactly what they are for. Some are loading the spy-ware info and messing with you task-bar. I am just getting this computer back running the way it is supposed to after working on it for last 3 to 4 weeks If I can help any don’t hesitate email me and I will try to help you walk through it.

If the PC Restore feature is still available on your HD just press the CTRL + F11 (or just F11) keys when it’s booting up. PC Restore is a special 4-5GB partition on your HD that is a Ghost image of the original HD. If you do this it will erase everything and reset it back to original–the day your bought it. All your data is gone! You can also request an MRI kit (CDs with the stuff for your PC) from Dell. Go to http://support.dell.com and use the online tech support feature (it’s free). It takes only a few minutes to request the kit compared to a few hours via phone call.

  3. STOP..
Call Dell and they will send you the recovery CD at no cost.
if you format it you will have to buy a new windows xp CD because you will loose the version of windows that is hidden on the partitioned hard drive

You can call dell and they’ll send you a recovery disc for free like me but if it’s only a few months old it’s still under warranty just call the techs at dell to fix it thats what the 1 year warranty is for.
