iTunes is the best way and probably the only way to do it.
go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download it from there.
if you want to download music first and then transfer into your iPod then you should get the http://www.kptunes.com to get all the music you want. once you think you have enough music downloaded and ready to move them to your iPod then install iTunes which will sync all the music you have downloaded to your iPod. i have been using it for a while and i am happy the way it works.
