There is no guarantee it can be recovered and if it has been overwritten it is gone. I reccommend Recuva (pronounced “recover”), it is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!
There are two kinds of people: those who have experienced data loss, and those who will. Remember the 3 rules of computing. 1) Back up 2) Back up 3) Back up.
The guy below me is completely wrong. Formatting does not delete anything. All information remains on the hard drive after a format. ONLY if it has been overwritten will it not be recoverable without profesional help.
Recuva does work well and I have recovered some files with it even after the HD had been formatted. In fact, recuva showed some files deleted long ago, on a HD that had been reformatted at least 3 times since then! SoftPerfect File Recovery is another good freeware file recovery program.
PC Inspector has a good freeware file recovery program. and there are others claimed to be good that I haven’t tried.

NOBODY EXCEPT DATA RECOVERING PROFESSIONALS CAN RECOVER DATA AFTER FORMATING HARD DRIVE
formating hard drive means total loss of all data so unless you send yr hard drive to professionals there is no help and even they might not be help any more

software to do it after hard drive formating does not exist on the market for individual users so even if you’re willing to pay it you want find it
guy above is totaly wrong – recuva is just recovery software before formating hard drive – after that there is just no help any more except if professionals do it

It has special UNFORMAT option and uses unique state-of-art algorithms to recover files even if their location and size is not stored in the file system structures.
Only thing i can suggest is sending it to someone like http://www.freehdrepair.com
They may or may not be able to get your data off, but at least its free, and they know what they are doing.
