My compact flash broke down on me suddenly. The compact flash doesn’t work on both my computer and camera. I’ve been using countless image recovery softwares to retrieve my photos but none has worked for me. Do I have to format this compact flash? If so, how? Or is there a better software out there that I’m missing?

CF cards are the most robust of all the memory cards.
Lexar has a program that is free with their Platinum series cards ($25 for a 2GB card) and I have had the best results using that program.
Don’t format it until you have attempted a recover of the files on it now. Just use your other CF cards until then.
I have CF cards that are over 6 years old that are still working fine.
I wouldn’t use that card again. It is likely to be defective, and you may end up losing even more pictures than you have already.
