The best software is free software. You do not have to purchase any of the stuff I am listing here:
Knoppix: http://www.knoppix.net/
Linux on a CD. Has all kinds of troubleshooting tools on it.
Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/
For installing on their computers. Cure the curse of Windows.
Hmm… I thought this was going to end up being a long list, but I guess not. Seriously though, Knoppix has a lot on it for hardware troubleshooting, and once you install Ubuntu all software problems are cured.
check google, you need POST card, and software with it.
still working. but you must know POST beeps codes basics
one extra box with Windows and diagnostic software that checks for HD monitoring.
P.S. POST card you can buy on ebay for around $30-$40, I bought one
Most likely you will be fixing windows computers so your gonna need AVG, a copy of windows, at least one external harddrive and probably another computer for research etc.
Generally people screw up their computers so bad that its better just to back up important files and format the HDD. Then reinstall windows and make sure that you take every step you can to prevent them from screwing it up again. Like installing firewalls, windows service packs, all updates, switch their internet browser to Opera or Firefox and set it as the default so they wont accidentally use IE. Also never use norton antivirus or McAfee those are the most annoying programs ever.
first learn how to back up a computer, you do not need a program for that
for anti-virus there are many from AVG to Zone Alarm. its all about what you or your customer wants
you might want a boot disc if you would like to just restart you computer all over like new. but that can get expensive try forums like pc-mech they will teach you a lot
That’s a very open question
It would depend on what’s wrong with the computers you are fixing.
Most computers coming into a store for repair have spyware and viruses which cause problems and slowdowns with windows.
Anti Spyware – Free programs available for download from http://www.download.com
AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spyware Blaster

Do not use anything from Symantec, they are hopeless and screwup more computers than they fix.
If you are doing data recovery from damaged file systems:
Getmydataback from http://www.runtime.org, it’s a program you have to purchase but it works very well.
