From My Recovery Manager On My Pc, Can I Copy My Recovery Software To My External Hd Insdead Of To A Disc?

I understand I can make one copy of my recovery/operation system from my recovery manager on my laptop. I wanted to know can I copy it to an external HD instead of coping it to a disc? Then copy it from the external HD to my new HD I am going to install.
