How Do I Reformat My Hard Drive And Re-install Windows Xp?

I booted from my original recovery CD and repartitioned and formatted the first partition – everything seemed to work. Then the Windows CD began to install XP, all OK during the ‘plain blue screen’ part.
Then it rebooted and began the second part of the installation (where it says how many minutes remaining) but it freezes almost straight away – while it is ‘installing devices’. Then that’s it – dead. Completely frozen and I have to switch off.
Any ideas? It’s a laptop so I can’t disconnect any devices. The disc is the one that came with the laptop so I thought it should be fine and should have all the correct software for the laptop on it.
Any help appreciated – before I throw it out of the window…!
