What Should I Do To Recover My Data From C Partition?

I had a virus boot crash (couldn’t start windows) and when I plugged the HD to another pc it said that HD didn’t have a format. Then someone trying to fix it copied sth (only 300Mb) on that partition, and now the C appears to be empty except for that file folder. I’ll be trying to recover my data with some programs such as “Active file recovery” but I want to know if I should or should not format the partition before starting the process. Or maybe it will be impossible to recover anything if that 300mb file overwritted essential files?
Could you also tell me which you think is the best software for data recovery (for NTFS)?
Hope someone can reply! Thanks

i use file scavenger. works like a charm. just as good as any “expensive data recovery place” for all we know they could be using that very program.
theres a good chance the file did overwrite something(s) but i’d rather have most back then none at all.http://quetek.com/prod02.htm
i wish you luck. i know how frustrating that is..

55 Best Free Data Recovery Utility
PC Inspector File Recovery 4 is a free utility that does an impressive job recovering accidentally deleted files or files lost through corruption of the file system. It works with the FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS file systems which pretty well covers all Windows installations.
It has some nice features, like the ability to recover files with lost headers, and to recover partitions even when the boot sector has been lost or damaged. It even supports the saving of recovered files on network drives.
Experienced users will find the product relatively easy to use but novices may be challenged. Data recovery by its very nature is a demanding task and cannot be reduced to simply pushing a button.
This is no home written utility – it is a serious product from a reputable German company with a long history in commercial data recovery. PC Inspector is the ideal product for those who want the security of a data recovery program but are not prepared to fork our big bucks for the extra features of high end products. Freeware, Windows 98 and later, 5.8MBhttp://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/…

See if u had a virus & u had formatted ur hardrive then it is not possible to get back the data & if u haven’t formatted the drive & put it no to another system check & clean the virus over there. But a drive with a virus is not good to get the data back but if possible try scanning the drive for virus & then only try recovering the data.

This has totally changed your data layout on the disk. You can probably no longer recover without sending the disk to a very expensive recovery company. What you should have done, for future reference, is booted from the OS cd, selected install at the first prompt, then selected the R repair option at the second prompt. This will normally recover the drive without data loss. You could try it now but it may be too late.
