Is There A Freeware That Works As Good As Windows Media Player 10?

Windows Media Player 10 and above are good for playing streaming videos. Because my friend uses pirated windows xp, he can’t download it.
Is there any other freeware media player that is equivalent to Windows Media Player 10 and above?
What will happen if my friend tries to authenticate his pirated windows xp? Will Microsoft corrupt his operating system?
Thank you for your help.

First of all, your friend shouldn’t be pirating software. If he doesn’t have enough money to buy the thing, there are free options that don’t require him breaking the law.
Second, I am not clear on what you mean by “equivalent” to Windows Media Player 10. WMP supports some formats that are controlled by Microsoft, and that no other software supports. He can try VLC for open formats like MP3, and he can try RealPlayer for a variety of others, but nothing will properly play WMV streams aside from WMP.
inclusive_disju: I don’t mean open as in “free.” I know that MP3 is still covered by patents and licenses. But the licenses are available, and if you want to implement MP3 outside of the official decoder (which isn’t really an end-user package anyway) you can. And since you use Linux, you must know that WMV3 isn’t supported in VLC, so if you’re not using WMP you’re likely to run into specific MS formats you can’t play. It IS better supported in mplayer, but the Windows versions of mplayer are kind of a mess.

Also try WinAmp. I use it as my default media player, because i have had nothing but problems with WMP 10 and 11, and Microsoft can’t or won’t help me fix it.

VLC Media Player; it plays anything and everything, even if its broken or corrupted.
